January 21 Alumni AssociationWe now have 5 people that will serve as the 1st Board of Directors for out Alumni Association! October 14 Johnny Rebel's Temporary RemovalOn October 3, 2009, Johnny Rebel was taken down from the pedestal he stood on for 44 years. After loading him onto the truck for transport to the district, more damage was discovered on his back and the leg that was extended (see photos).
At this point we are pursuing other options, such as a rebuild in bronze. What we have discovered that the cost of bronze is just about the same amount as a new "plaster/fiberglass" Rebel. By doing JR in bronze we (and future REBELS will not be faced with maintenance every few years.)
We are also in the process of applying for a 501(c)(3) - non-profit organization (Savanna High School Alumni Association). The association's primary purpose is to restore JR as well as insuring the center quad maintained. For example, the district mentioned that there is no irrigation for the plant life that is currently in place; the class of '65's gift needs a little maintenance; keeping the cannons (and the wood) maintained. Depending on the amount raised, we could also award scholarships.
We need people that will serve on the Board of Directors (uncompensated) etc. If you're interested, please let me know. There is a significant amount of paper work that needs to be completed/filed with the State and IRS and ANYONE that has experience with completing the paper work....PLEASE WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! September 21 Status UpdateWe have had a VERY difficult time trying to find someone that could fix JR. Disneyland was a bust...they provided me with a name and he doesn't call back. I sent information to the Art Institue in Costa Mesa - I have a lead on someone who may be able to do the work. I have requested a bid from him. All I need is to find a 3rd person...so if anyone knows anyone, that knows anyone...etc please send them my way. I know that several people have raised the question about if JR will return....WE HAVE THE BACKING OF THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES THAT JR will be replaced once he's had his face (body) lift. I am trying to get ASB to help us support our efforts. HOWEVER, a personal clash early on in this process has the Activities Director & I at odds. This certainly does not mean someone ELSE couldn't do it. This "project" landed in my lap a year ago in October and I have had help. However, what I need is some additional help in trying to find someone that could perform the work necessary. The current bid I have is $45,.000; which includes costs for marketing, mailings etc. Those of us that have been working on this really don't like this number. We've discusssed the potential of filing for non-profit status (as an Alumni Association) under IRS 501(c)(3). Once again we need the assistance of an attorney to determine the cost for this. Anaheim HS has their 501(c)(3) am I'm trying to get information from them. The non-profit status requires Articles of Incorporation, bylaws and a board of directors. The "Association" could be on going for future generations for scholarships, keeping the Quad looking spiffy. The bottom line is...can't really do anything until we find out how much it's going to cost. I am planning on pursuing the 501(c)(3) status to determine the level of difficulty to receive this from the IRS. The following "photos" are all the information we have regarding how and what the statue was made of.....

May 29 Johnny Rebel - The InvestigationGreeting Rebel Alumni
On May 26, the district and the small alumni group, met at Johnny Rebel to conduct an investigation of just how he's attached to the pedestal and to investigate the pedestal.
The good news is that JR is SECURELY attached to the pedestal - he's not about to fall over. As far as the pedestal is concerned it is in GREAT condition. Although there are holes here and there (who knows how they got there), there are NO cracks!
The district is now in the process of determining the cost of x-raying the pedestal (top, middle and footings); the cost of a structural engineer to determine the stability of the steel frame inside JR. Once they have all that information, we will have another meeting to determine our next step(s).
If ANY alumni have access to an e-ray machine or is a structural engineer, PLEASE CONTACT ME! This would save us and/or the district money!
I have pieces of concrete from the top of the pedestal (yes, I'm crazy)...I'm thinking of selling it on e-bay as a fund raiser - I'm kidding.
The district is also helping us connect with the current student body to get them REBELED up!
We found out that JR has NOT been touched (paint and general maintenance) since 1974! I remember him as being cooper.
